Marion Tech Students Made Memories at Study Abroad Trip to Italy

Study Abroad Trip to Italy
June 13, 2024

Where can Marion Technical College take you? For 33 people, it took them on a study abroad trip to Italy. They included students, faculty, staff, alumni, community members, parents, partners and children.

The Marion Tech group took a week-long tour over spring break in March 2024. The trip included dozens of sites across Italy including Rome, Venice and Assisi. Some travelers stayed to celebrate Easter at the Vatican.

“This study abroad trip through MTC was an incredible experience to explore another country while in a group and having everything planned!” said student Olivia Vollrath. “My favorite thing about this trip to Italy was exploring Venice and Capri. Those places stood out to me and were incredible to see in person.”

See highlights of this trip on Marion Tech’s Facebook page. The memorable sights were not the only highlight of this trip.

“Along with the places we visited, it was so much fun traveling along with other people and getting to know them better! I made new friends that I continue to talk to. I highly recommend a trip through MTC. You will not be disappointed!” Olivia Vollrath said.

Olivia Volrath’s father, Kevin Volrath, appreciated the planning and organization to make the trip smooth and memorable.

“I had not envisioned myself having the opportunity to join such a trip and spend such unforgettable time with my daughter. The fact that Marion Tech offered this trip to family members is truly impressive and not something I had expected.” Kevin said. “Olivia has spoken highly of the teachers and faculty she has met, so it is easy to understand why Olivia has really enjoyed attending Marion.”

“From seeing sights I never thought I would see, to meeting many new people such as you both, to spending time with Olivia;  this experience was outstanding, and I cannot thank you enough for making it happen,” Kevin said.

Twins Lauren and Olivia Flinchbaugh both study at Marion Tech and decided to take the adventure together.

“I have always wanted to travel but the process of planning it and going alone seemed too overwhelming,” Lauren said. “Through classes at MTC and through high school I have learned a lot about the Roman Empire which sparked my interest in specifically traveling to Italy.“

While Lauren enjoyed the culture, history and breathtaking views. She also enjoyed the independence and getting to know the group. Beyond the photos and memories, Lauren found a life-long lesson.

“I highly encourage other students to go on a trip in the future because it changes your mindset. To those students who are scared, I encourage them to just do it.  I was very nervous and I am so thankful I did,” Lauren said. “I learned a lot about myself, met knew people, and got to experience more of the world. I wish students would stop letting fear get in the way of experiencing a trip like this that opens your mind and brings out a newfound confidence. The Italy trip has made me even more excited for the next trip which I hope for more students to enjoy as well.”

Kristi Butler, the director of Career Services at Marion Tech, took the trip with her teenage daughter.

“We had a great time in Italy!” said Kristi said. “We ate plenty of good food--so much gelato. We had great travel companions, but the weather did not always cooperate. However, this trip allowed us to create forever memories. Shout out to MTC for this opportunity!”
