Placement Testing

Your advisor at Marion Technical College uses a multiple measures approach to place you into courses at the right level of challenge for you.

Multiple measures in higher education advising is a holistic placement strategy that uses multiple indicators—such as high school GPA, specific coursework, non-cognitive assessments, and transcripts—rather than relying solely on a single, one-time standardized test to determine student readiness for college-level English and math. This approach aims to reduce unnecessary remedial coursework, close equity gaps for underserved students, and improve placement accuracy.

ACCUPLACER

MTC uses the Next Generation ACCUPLACER assessments for English and math placement, and its own science placement assessment for certain science courses. ACCUPLACER assessments are untimed, while the science assessment is a timed 1-hour test. All placement testing is free to MTC students. Always talk with your advisor before scheduling a placement test—they are not required for every student, and your advisor will help you determine which tests, if any, are necessary.  If you require accommodations due to a disability, discuss your needs with your advisor.

Please bring your photo ID to the testing center on test day.

Scheduling Placement Testing for CCP Students

  • Confirm with your MTC advisor which placement tests are necessary for your course plan.
  • Most CCP students complete placement testing through their high school. Contact your high school guidance counselor for availability.
  • If placement testing is not available through your high school, contact the MTC Testing Center to schedule an appointment.
  • Students without a photo ID may use a school-issued student profile printout that includes a photo and full name.

Test Scores and Retesting

  • You will receive your score report when testing is complete. Your advisor will explain how your results affect course placement.
  • ACCUPLACER tests may be retaken after a two-week waiting period. There is no limit on the number of ACCUPLACER attempts.
  • The Science Placement Test may only be taken once.
