Pre-Bachelor's/Transfer

Pre-Bachelor's Degrees

Under Ohio House Bill 119, the Ohio legislature authorized Ohio technical colleges to seek authorization to award Associate of Arts (AA) and Associate of Science (AS) degrees. Marion Technical College has been approved by the Ohio Board of Regents to offer the Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees.

Associate of Arts Degree

The Associate of Arts (AA) is essentially the first two years towards a Bachelor of Arts degree. The AA degree is a two year liberal arts/general education degree with an emphasis in English, Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Mathematics, and Natural Sciences. Graduates of this program will have the general education necessary to pursue a Bachelor’s degree at most four-year colleges and universities as Juniors.

Associate Degree of Science

The Associate of Science (AS) is essentially the first two years towards a Bachelor of Science degree. The AS degree is a two year liberal arts/general education degree with an emphasis in English, Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Mathematics, and Natural Sciences. Graduates of this program will have the general education necessary to pursue a Bachelor’s degree at most four-year colleges and universities as Juniors.

The purpose of these baccalaureate-oriented associate degrees is to enable students (1) to transfer to colleges and universities and earn baccalaureate degrees, or (2) to enable students to terminate academic study after two years with a proportionate recognition of academic achievement through receipt of an associate degree. This degree will provide students with the opportunity to affordably complete their first two years of the baccalaureate degree and transfer credit to public four- year colleges and universities.

Transfer of MTC Credits to Other Colleges

MTC students have many opportunities to explore upon graduation. More and more graduates plan to continue their education toward a bachelor’s degree at a four-year college or university.  See your advisor for more information.

Future, current students and graduates need to understand the options for transferring credits as well as the new Ohio Articulation and Transfer Policy (House Bill 95) http://www.regents.state.oh.us/transfer/index.html

Transfer of Other College Credits to MTC

Early planning for transfer during the admission process is important to ensure that you receive proper evaluation of credits that may be applied to a program of study at MTC.

  • It is important to start with the Office of Admission with an admission appointment. Request an “Official” copy of transcripts from each institution attended to sent to the MTC office of Admission.

Credit-By-Examination
and Life Experience Credit

In some departments you may be permitted to progress to more advanced work in a particular program if you can demonstrate college-level competency.

If you have qualifications from previous education, job training, self-study, occupational, or other experiences, you may be able to earn credit in certain courses by successfully completing a proficiency examination or by applying for Life Experience Credit.

Either or both processes may be used to reduce the number of courses required to graduate, provided your qualifications are similar in nature and quality to those one would acquire by enrolling in those courses offered by the College.
You must see the dean or director of your program if you are considering applying for Life Experience Credit.

A maximum of 48 term hours of credit may be earned through exam, life experience, or any combination thereof. A per credit hour, nonrefundable fee must be paid to the
Business Office before a proficiency examination is taken or credentials for Life Experience Credit are evaluated.

Transfer Credits
To transfer credit from another college, your courses must be from institutions approved by appropriate regional accrediting associations as recognized in the Higher Education Directory. Credits from the military or professional and specialized schools and programs may also be submitted for evaluation.

Approval of transfer credits is at the discretion of the department dean or director. Courses must have been completed with a “C” (or a "satisfactory" on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory evaluation scale). A course completed at the “D” level will not be transferred unless that course is a part of a continued sequence and a “C” or better was earned in the next higher level course in the sequence.

At least 32 credit hours for any degree program must be earned at MTC, of which 16 must be in technical courses. The number of transfer credits accepted toward the degree or certificate will vary depending upon the program requirements and credit hour totals.

College Transfer Agreements
MTC works closely with Ohio colleges to maintain transfer agreements to ensure transfer of credits and advanced standings for MTC graduates pursuing four-year educations.

Some colleges do not establish written agreements, yet offer excellent transfer opportunities for two-year college graduates. See the College's Transfer Brochure for more information.

Transfer Services
In addition to transferring their coursework to many public and private colleges and universities through established transfer agreements, MTC students can also complete individual courses or course sequences that are guaranteed to transfer to Ohio public universities. Ohio H.B. 95 mandated that the Ohio Board of Regents (OBR) establish policies and procedures applicable to all state colleges and universities to ensure that students can begin their higher education at any state college or university, including Marion Technical College, and transfer credits to any other state college or university without unnecessary barriers. This allows students, parents, and advisors to develop a viable educational plan using all the resources of the public higher education system – beginning at any point along the pathway, from high school through college. Three (3) key stipulations of H.B. 95 mandated that colleges and universities:

  • Assure transfer of coursework and degrees without unnecessary duplication
  • Use a universal course equivalency classification system to eliminate inconsistent judgment in transfer credit application
  • Admit students with Associate degrees to state public universities on an equally competitive basis with native students for specific programs and with priority over out-of-state associate degree graduates and out-of-state transfer students.

According to state policy, students can maximize the transfer of college credit to Ohio public institutions through the two primary means highlighted below. It is possible for some students to complete 50 percent of their Bachelor’s degree at MTC depending upon their chosen major field of study.

Transfer Assurance Guides (TAGs Click on link to view Approved TAGs.)
TAGs are groups of foundational and other courses that represent commonly accepted pathways to Bachelor degrees, including specific majors. TAG courses are guaranteed to transfer and apply to degree/program requirements as a group or on an individual basis according to each major. Each of the 38 TAGs typically includes a variable number of introductory or core courses in the major, e.g., Business or Psychology, plus recommended courses from within the Ohio Transfer Module, e.g., English Composition or Sociology. (see OTM information below.)
TAGS Completed.

Ohio Transfer Module (OTM)
The OTM is a subset or the complete set of a college’s or university’s general education requirements that represent a body of knowledge and academic skills common across Ohio colleges and universities in the fields of: 1) English composition; 2) mathematics; 3) arts/humanities; 4) social and behavioral sciences; and 5) natural and physical sciences. The OTM provides students the opportunity to easily transfer course credits. A college’s OTM courses are guaranteed to transfer among Ohio public institutions of higher education as a block or on an individual course-by-course basis. Students can transfer credit for successfully completed OTM courses without completing the entire module.

H.B. 95 also called for colleges and universities to fully implement the Course Applicability System (CAS), an electronic advising system that describes the transfer opportunities for students through a Web-based portal. When fully operational, CAS will be an effective and user-friendly tool that helps students transfer and apply credits to degree requirements in ways that provide for better planning, advising, and transfer. This “e-hub” will serve as an electronic system of transferring student information across all campuses – a type of student/academic “ATM” – so that students can easily access and send information among campuses. The long-term aim is to create a “one-stop shop” for students – a portal for incoming information and for outgoing transcripts. In addition, such an electronic clearinghouse of information will provide high school students and others with clear degree pathways that describe the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful at all levels.

The goal of all of the above efforts is to allow students to easily transfer credits between campuses, and be guaranteed that the courses apply to specific degree programs. This should improve the ability of students to progress to degree requirements without duplication of effort – or cost. The overall intention is clear – Ohio needs more educated citizens. Ohio’s articulation and transfer policy provides an important element in the strategy for achieving such a goal. By making transfer easier at every step along the way, it seems likely that more students will pursue higher education and create better lives for all Ohioans.
