Engineering Technologies Programs

Basic Power Lineworker Certificate

Because many individuals are simply looking to add to or expand on their occupational skills sets, or complete an organized curriculum in a relatively short period of time, Marion Technical College offers certificate programs to satisfy certain short-term training needs.

Certificate options are created by identifying core ‘‘needs’’ in the local workforce and offering concentrated curriculum blocks to accommodate the schedules of working adults.

Typically, a certificate program at MTC can be completed in one year (three quarters of full-time study), and many of the courses will apply toward later associate degree work to the extent that they are required in a specific program or as appropriate elective courses.

The Basic Power Lineworker Certificate prepares students to perform basic tasks necessary to enter the power lineworker trade as an entry level apprentice. The skills and knowledge developed will enable the student to climb poles, build basic overhead lines, work with tools and equipment unique to the trade, and learn important safety concepts.

Career Opportunities:

In 2006, approximately 113,000 individuals worked in the U.S. as power lineworkers, maintenance specialists, and repair technicians. National labor data projects a modest growth trend (no more than 8 percent) in this field through the year 2014.  Ohio predicts a similar trend (near 8 percent) for all installation and repair fields through 2012.
